Should TKM be bannd in public schools? Why or why not?

To Kill a Mocking Bird, in all honesty, should not be banned anywhere. I am not a fan of reading, and to be honest, I lost track of time, and never read past the first chapter.

But, I believe that everyone should have a choice of what they read. No book should e banned for things about race, and related topics. Society, no matter how hard it tries, cannot be sheltered from things like racism, which, even though many people believe do not exist anymore, still exist.

The world is a bad place, but we all live in it. Books should not be ignored simply because they are offensive. If, every time someone was offended, something was banned, the entire world would be covered in yellow tape. Many people are sensitive at different levels on different subjects. If I was offended by the word “the”, no one would ban that word. The same should go for books.

Banning books has to do with people’s opinions on what is and is not appropriate. Society should be able to decide for itself what is and is not appropriate, and each individual should get his/her choice of what he/she read. How can young people form their own opinions on different subjects if they are sheltered from them?

Most of society does such a good job at telling people what is and isn’t right, simply so people can go on and ignore things, and ignore their desire to discover things for themselves. Human beings are programmed to search out information. We are “hungry”, in a sense,  for knowledge, experience, and emotion. We desire to form an opinion, and are being convinced out of that desire. It’s like telling a small child they don’t want candy. If you take the candy out of their site, they soon forget about it, but eventually the desire comes back.

We cannot achieve/accomplish these desires (the desires for knowledge, experience, and emotion) without finding things out on our own. So, we need to read the books, and judge, on our own, where the very fine line between appropriate and inappropriate, which is a very fine line. And, everyone’s line is in a different place, because we are all different, and all have different areas of offense and comfort, and that’s what makes life beautiful.

I don’t understand why any books are banned from schools. It truly is a shame.
I wrote this for my freshman English class. Shut up.

I agree, we're reading TKM now, and we're one of the lucky schools who get to read it
